Converging Roads

The St. John Paul II Foundation, a Catholic apostolate dedicated to building a culture of life and love, will host its first annual Converging Roads conference on medical ethics. Scheduled for May 7 at the Foundation's headquarters on 7730 Westview Dr., Houston, the event's presenting partners include, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the University of St. Thomas and the Catholic Health Care Professionals of Houston. Entitled Human Dignity at the End of Life, it is aimed at medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, administrators and chaplains enabling them to better realize the highest ethical and medical standards of their profession.

The conference will feature seven nationally recognized experts who will address various end of life issues. They include Dr. Grattan Brown, associate professor and chair of theology at Belmont Abbey; Dr. John Travaline, professor of thoracic medicine and surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University; Sister Suzanne Gross, FSE, of Home Care Hospice; Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Director of Education for the National Catholic Bioethics Center; Dr. Robin Pierucci, Neonatologist and Medical Director NICU, Bronson Children's Hospital; and Arland K. Nichols noted bioethicist and founding President of the St. John Paul II Foundation.

Topics to be covered include: medical futility and clinical aspects of end of life care, advanced directives and artificial nutrition and hydration, along with responding to requests for assisted suicide. This conference will also see the addition end of life care as it relates to neonatal care.

According to Daniel Cardinal DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, "In society today we need medical professionals who live the faith, who know the beauty of the faith, and carry it out in the care of their patients.
